Review #252: The One (The Selection #3) by Kiera Cass

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“I'll love you until my very last breath. Every beat of my heart is yours. I don't want to die without you knowing that.”

----Kiera Cass

Kiera Cass, the best-selling author of The Selection series pens her third book in this enchanting dystopian series, The One which features a young lady who fought hard enough to win over the prince Maxon's heart as well as the crown, but as the competition is closing in to the last stage, so the threats and attacks on the palace from the external world are increasing with each passing minute.

Synopsis:

The time has come for one winner to be crowned.

When she was chosen to compete in the Selection, America never dreamed she would find herself anywhere close to the crown—or to Prince Maxon's heart. But as the end of the competition approaches, and the threats outside the palace walls grow more vicious, America realizes just how much she stands to lose—and how hard she'll have to fight for the future she wants.

Okay let's once again, take a moment to woo-ahh at that enticing and eye-catching book cover.

Elise, Kriss, Celeste and America are the only girls who have advanced to the finale of The Selection where only one girl will win the crown to the throne as well as the crown to the Prince Maxon's heart. Not only that, here we are introduced with lots of political drama and threats to the monarchy ruled by King Clarkson, who doesn't portray himself as a strong ruler, given the fact that the attacks by both Southern and Northern rebels turn up like an agenda, whereas there is lot of animosity between the king and the prince. Still, the whole book once again follows the same old pattern of that old love triangle where the readers know from the very start that who will end up with whom, still the author managed to stretch this drama all through out this book.

Although there is lot of tension, from the external forces trying to overrule and dominate the kingdom and whereas one other group of rebels trying to protect the king and his monarchy, still the tension is focused between Aspen who is now a palace guard, Maxon and America, who's impulsiveness and smart mouth has got the better of her.

America wants Aspen because she is cared to fall victim to Maxon's openly cheating on her ways, and Maxon gets confused among the four girls who he really wants the most. Stuck in between is poor Aspen, who in this book made me feel sorry for him, who is still trying to figure out whether he should go for America or to go for someone else among these four girls. America has once again annoyed me with her egotistic attitude and impulsive decisions, but almost near the end of the book, she started to develop in her own skin and I finally got to adore her.

Yes the characters in this book is much better than the previous books. This time they are featured with a bit of depth and emotions to make the readers feel for their dilemma. In fact, the girls competing against America are strongly featured with both their flaws and perfection, and this time really I could relate to the characters.

The writing is really good and though some validations are missing it's point, still it's readable and can easily win over many hearts. As usual the intricacy and depth behind certain occurrence of events are lacking, and the narration travels between Maxon-Aspen-America love triangle most of the time. The tension between the love drama kept me engaged and intrigued, and with that justified and breath-taking climax, I'm surely going to pick up the next book in the series.

Hence The One has made me like the series finally, and even though it has it's own flaws, I believe we should all give this series a chance to be read by us, after all, very soon The Selection series is going to be a major motion picture, and you know how huge Warner Bros is! So go ahead, grab a copy of this book now.

Verdict: If you are looking for a light read over the summer, then go for this series.

  1. First of all, I would like to thank you for sharing this great piece of content.
Sometimes things that were taught in class were not enough for students. Sometimes, students need some extra support where they can clear their doubts and queries which are unanswered in the classroom. It is seen that most of the students hesitate to ask their questions in the classroom because they hesitate to ask in front of the whole class therefore most of the doubts remain answered. This might be a reason of low grades of students in exams. To resolve this problem most of the parents opt for online tuition for class 1, to 12th and for competitive exams.
